Many Christians are concerned as to whether or not they have committed the unpardonable sin. First of all, what is the unpardonable sin? We know that sin is a violation of God’s laws, but repenting give mankind forgiveness for his sins; Act. 2:38, “…repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” Scripture clearly states that God will not remember our sins once we repent; Heb. 10:17, “and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” If repentance is the catalyst that initiates forgiveness for sins, how can there be a sin classified as unpardonable? Perhaps repentance provides forgiveness for all of an individual’s past sins, but he is still capable of committing the unpardonable sin in the future. Let’s see what scripture have to say about the unpardonable sin.
The phrase unpardonable sin is not found in the KJV of the Bible. It is marketed as the unpardonable sin simply because it is classified as unforgiveable. In scripture, the unpardonable sin is referenced as blasphemy of the Holy Ghost (Spirit). Please note that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and blasphemy of the Holy Ghost are synonymous. The Greek word for ghost and spirit is the same word.
The Bible clearly states that there is a sin that is unpardonable and it’s identified as blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. It is so reprehensible to God that man is instructed not to even intercede on behalf on this sin; 1 Joh. 5:16, “…there is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.”
Scripture states that man can be forgiven for all sins except blasphemy of the Holy Ghost; Mt. 12:31, “…all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” This poses a new question; what is blasphemy? Blasphemy is to say something is the opposite of it’s true meaning. An example of blasphemy is to confess something that is good to be something that is evil or to profess something that is wrong to be something that is right.
During the time of Jesus’ ministry, He performed all of the thoughts and desires of God the Father. Now that Jesus has been crucified that task has undoubtedly been transferred to the Holy Ghost; therefore it is the Holy Ghost that is acting on behalf of God in the world today. In order to establish blasphemy, a spirit of opposition must be identified, which is Antichrist; 1 Joh. 4:3, “…every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist…” As the name implies, Antichrist is in opposition to God; 2 Thess. 2:3-4, “…that man of sin… who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” Although Antichrist is a human being, he blasphemes by declaring himself to be God.
Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is openly declaring that deceptive signs and wonders performed by Antichrist are not really actions of Antichrist, but are actually performances of the Holy Ghost. Accepting, believing and worshipping the endeavors of Antichrist but attributing them to be the undertakings of God is blasphemy of the Holy Ghost.
A Biblical example of blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is to worship the image of the beast and accept his mark; Rev. 14:9-11, “…saying with a loud voice, if any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God…and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone…the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night…” This is a perfect description of blasphemy of the Holy Ghost because the punishment will continue forever.
The mark of the beast will be initiated by the False Prophet and will only be administered if the recipient worships the image of Antichrist. This is blasphemy of the Holy Ghost because the recipient is worshipping Antichrist’s image, but is professing that he is worshipping the Holy Spirit of God. Once an individual worships the image of the beast and receives the mark of the beast, he has committed the unpardonable sin.
One should not be concerned whether or not he has committed the unpardonable sin. If he had committed it, there wouldn’t be any doubt. Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost cannot be accomplished accidently. The undertaking of this sin is a deliberate, conscious, and selfish act that is embarked upon with one’s full knowledge and understanding. To commit the unpardonable sin, one must first be a born-again believer. One must totally abandon his belief in the Holy Ghost and the power thereof. Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is to declare that the miracles performed by the invisible Holy Ghost is fake and unholy, while at the same time proclaiming that the signs and wonders performed by the visible image of Antichrist are holy and originating from the only true god.
